FOOX: When Harlem Came to Paris
Feb 28, 2009 7:38:47 AM
Harold Datson has this to say about his event coming up this evening:
"I've got a truly unique program for those that enjoy a thorough, concept rich experience:
"When Harlem Came to Paris"
Set
with a fictitious back story, "When Harlem Came to Paris" celebrates
the artistry associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Mamie Mason hosts
a variety of literary and musical artists for their last night in
Paris. Completely unscripted, portrayals of Marita Bonner, Wallace
Thurman, R. Bruce Nugent, Bessie Smith, Claude McKay, Count Bassie and
Josephine Baker are a main focus of the night including live music and
performances, foods and cocktails sponsored by Crown Royal."
In
addition, a special silent auction will be held to raise funds for the
ABEI initiative that partners with DC Public Schools to bring French
culture and language to students in grades 3-5.
For more information visit www.harleminparis.com and for tickets call the venue, the Alliance Francaise de Washington: 202.234.7911 or log onto: www.francedc.org. Mention "LSP" for the member pricing.

FOOX: DONORS CHOOSE (how to help poor kids)
Feb 26, 2009 8:40:48 AM
I thought this was a cool charity that seems to be more interested in helping the kids than helping themselves. You might say I have become a little discouraged about charities since when you peel back the overcoat of poverty you more often than not discover either a padded beauracracy with wasteful spending OR the big bucks goes to the heads of the charity. It's a shame, but it's a fact.
However, I took a look at this charity DONORSCHOOSE and it looks bona fide and I think the concept is really nice for these little kids to get presents and then spend an hour writing a thank you note with colors and big broken letters.
